COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this course, parents learn Mariposa’s social-emotional learning method for reducing stress and building resilience. Through specific skills and language, you can create the type of relationship you want with your child.

Module 1: Provides an explanation of power struggles or tension in relationships with your children as well as the role of stress on the brain and learning and behavior. We explore the limitations of standard approaches to discipline, and the research on how emotional resilience develops.

Modules 2-7: Teaches Mariposa’s method for helping adults build emotional resilience in their children, reduce their own stress and reduce challenging behaviors.  Specifically, participants learn how to:

  • Understand and communicate the child’s feelings and perspective in order to create a stronger connection, help your child feel understood, and thereby lower their stress responses, and build self awareness.
  • Communicate authentically your own feelings and needs in a way that is more likely to be heard, strengthen connection and reduce your own stress and build your child's social awareness.
  • Work together to address problems and collaborate to meet your own needs and your child's needs.
  • Reinforce positive behaviors in such a way as to increase the likelihood that your children develop self-motivation and increase positive behaviors and perseverance.
  • Establish order and control in a manner that actually leads to increased self control and less challenging behaviors.

The final module provides an opportunity to put the skills together and find ways to sustain and continue learning.
